Section 2.3 A Tour Through the Brain
Section 2.3 A Tour Through the Brain:
The brain is the executive of the human body. It is this human organ that separates us from other animals. In this part of the chapter you will learn about the three major sections of the lower brain: the hindbrain, midbrain, and forebrain. You will also discover what the vital functions of each of these areas to our normal functioning in everyday life.
Following you will explore “higher” brain functions in the cerebral cortex. Although the cerebral cortex is quite thin, it contains over 30 billion neurons. As you can imagine, with so many neurons, this area of the brain must be very important, and it is. The cerebral cortex controls higher mental processes and motor control.
Beneath the Cerebral Cortex are two hemispheres of wrinkled matter that looks like a walnut if you ever had the chance to see one. Further divided, the two hemispheres can be broken down into eight lobes (4 on each side) that each have different responsibilities to our everyday functioning.
