Chapter Overview

Students will develop an understanding of “what is psychology?” You’ll have the opportunity to see why we study psychology and discuss its major objectives. You will also learn about the history of psychology. From its origins in Europe to its world-wide appeal today. Following, you’ll read about the differing career opportunities available to people who choose to study this field. Furthermore, there may be a perception that psychology is “just ideas” but throughout this chapter, and this book, you will see that psychology is more of a science; a science based on research, ethical guidelines, and specific methodology.
