Lesson 5.4a Getting “High” in Meditation: A Positive Route to Altered Consciousness
This lesson focuses on one of the healthier alternative people have if they are interested in altering their state of consciousness. Meditation is a technique millions of people have used for thousands of years to have a heightened sense of calm, block out unnecessary distractions, and become more “connected” with themselves. One of the most popular forms of meditation is yoga – which comes in several different forms.
Lesson 5.4b The Mystery of Hypnosis: Recreational and Therapeutic Uses
This last lesson in the chapter looks at the often mysterious, yet misunderstood phenomenon known as hypnosis. Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is nothing more than a heightened state of suggestability where a person becomes more focused, imaginative, and receptive.
Although this may not surprise most people, there are a lot of myths that needed to be dispelled. Such as, people can be forced into it (you must be a willing participant), that you have superhuman strength (you don’t turn into Superman when you are hypnotized), and probably the biggest myth that you will behave unethically (everything a person does under hypnosis, they would do if they were completely awake).
Understanding hypnosis doesn’t diminish the effect it has on people. If anything, it makes you appreciate the power of mind over matter.
